- INSTRUCTIONS
 |
|
The tabs above represent the two Tractor brands that we carry. Each has their own unique strengths and features, making it important that you compare each brand and model, selecting the one that best fits your needs; our FAQs page is also helpful for this. When you select one of the brand tabs above, you will then see a second group of tabs appear. These tabs will show you the specific models that we sell for that brand.
For example:
If you were interested in viewing the specifications of a Grillo model G107D you would select the Grillo tab above. Then, from the second group of tabs you would select the G107D tab and the details about that tractor would be displayed. This way, you can view all our tractor choices from this one web page, and easily navigate between brands and models for comparison. Go ahead and give it a try, you can always return here by selecting the INSTRUCTIONS tab.

- BCS
- Company History
|
The BCS company was founded near Milan, Italy in 1942 by Luigi Castoldi and two associates, Camillo Bonnetti and Severino Speroni(Castoldi is the “C” in BCS; the other two the “B” and “S”) and their first product was a motorized walk-behind sickle-bar mower. The idea was to revolutionize small-scale hay mowing for the small mountainside farmer in Europe; the only other way to cut hay was with a scythe (great exercise, but a bit tiring on several acres) or hoofstock-powered mowing machines (which ate about as much as they mowed on small plots). The two associates thought it was too risky and bailed out of the company in the second year (so, even though the company retained the original name, they got rid of the BS) but Mr. Castoldi kept it going and after WWII ended, government money was available to small farmers in Italy to help modernize/mechanize the small farms and get their economy moving and competitive. Sales took off, and by the 1960’s BCS had produced tens of thousands of machines. Up until the late ‘60s, BCS only produced variations of their original hay-mowing machine, with a few accessories (such as a transport cart which could be attached to the front of it, and a trailing “sulky” seat to ride)…in 1967, a new chapter opened in the world of BCS when they began a technology-sharing venture with the GRILLO company of Cesena, Italy, which had been building walk-behind tillage equipment since 1953. The outcome was both companies offering multi-purpose all-gear-driven walk-behind tractors and a full range of soilworking, mowing, snow removal, transport and other assorted implements...every practical application was explored for these versatile two-wheel machines. The two companies collaborated until the early 1980s and they currently operate as competitors, though each owes the other for where they are today. In the 1990s, BCS purchased two of their competitors in Italy, the Ferrari tractor company (not the same as the racecar company...Ferrari is a common name in Italy!) and the Pasquali tractor company, making BCS the largest producer of walk-behind tractors in the world.

- BCS 710
 |
|
BCS Model 710 walk-behind tractor (Shown with 18” tiller implement)
This unit, new for 2011, is NOT the same as the BCS 710 sold in previous years (from 1995 to 2006), which was a single-speed machine like the current 712. This “new” 710 instead uses the same 2-working-speed transmission with transport speed as the 718/722, but has the handlebars of the previous model 716/720, which were not quite as adjustable and cheaper to produce (hence, part of the reason for the lower price...see our Walk-Behind Tractor Prices page). This tractor is equipped with a Commercial-grade Subaru-Robin 6hp engine, and is a great minimum-priced BCS tractor for small properties and gardens, with no sacrifice of the power-train quality of the larger models. NOTE: When figuring out implement compatibility on our chart: This tractor will run the same implement selection as the BCS 718. (Directly comparable machine in Grillo brand: G85 6hp)

- BCS 712
|
BCS Model 712 walk-behind tractor (Shown with 8hp engine & 20” tiller implement)
Our most basic walk-behind tractor with one speed in either direction. Purchased mostly by the rental market because of its simplicity, while maintaining the durability characteristic of the larger units. Also popular as a dedicated sickle-bar machine for small areas. Lack of a faster ‘cultivating’ speed while using a tiller, however, makes the 712 a poor choice for anything but small home gardens.

- BCS 718
|
BCS Model 718 walk-behind tractor (Shown with 6.5hp engine & 40” cutter bar implement)
The benefit of additional wheel speeds make the BCS 718 a more popular and versatile tractor than the BCS 712. This model is well suited for small gardening, stationary (pressure washer, chipper/shredder) applications, some snow removal and transport tasks, but only limited mowing applications due to slow overall ground speed. This is the exact same tractor as the BCS 722, except the 722 has a larger engine. (Comparable model in Grillo brand tractor: G85)

- BCS 722
|
BCS Model 722 walk-behind tractor (Shown with 8hp Honda engine & 20” tiller implement)
The BCS 722 has the same transmission as the BCS 718 tractor but with more horsepower to handle a larger array of implements, such as the wood splitter and power sweeper, which the 718 lacks the power for. This tractor is a nice size for the average home gardener, and will handle a variety of other tasks well, except for larger mowing applications…Ground speed is limited on any of the 700 series BCS machines. - BCS 732
|
BCS Model 732 walk-behind tractor (Shown with 11hp engine & 26” tiller implement)
This tractor has same gearbox as BCS 718 and 722 but with lockable differential for ease of maneuvering, larger adjustable track wheels and larger engine, which enables it to handle a larger assortment of implements than BCS 722. Also features longer handlebars for improved control. This size unit is good for medium-sized soilworking and stationary applications, but not ideal for large mowing applications due to limited speed and no standard steering brakes. (Comparable transmission / implement compatibility in Grillo brand tractor: Model G85d)

BCS Model 739 Walk-Behind tractor (photo yet to be released—product available Spring 2013)
This unit offers an extra working speed over the model 732, and also has BCS’s new hydraulic clutch. It does NOT, however, have a “transport” speed, and transport implements are not recommended for it. Otherwise, it uses the same implement selection as the 732. (Comparable transmission compatibility in Grillo brand tractor: Between G85d [10hp] and G107d.)

- BCS 749
|
BCS Model 749 Walk-Behind tractor (shown with 30” tiller implement) (stock European photo, U.S. models differ slightly)
The model 749 is identical in its transmission and features to the BCS 853, with the exception of the 749 having NO “transport” speed, so transport carts are not recommended to fit it. Otherwise, it uses the same implement selection as the 853. This machine also features BCS’s new “PowerSafe” hydraulic clutch. (The model number of this unit follows the European model number sequence, rather than the “Americanized” BCS model sequence which has existed in North America since 1995, which is why it seems a bit out of order). Comparable transmission size in Grillo brand tractor: G107d.

- BCS 852/853
|
BCS Model 852 or 853 walk-behind tractor (Shown with diesel engine, oversize [5x12x22”] wheels & 31” brush mower implement)
The 800 series BCS machines are currently our best selling tractors. Extra working speed (compared to BCS 700 series) and standard steering brakes make these tractors excellent for larger mowing, haymaking, transport and snow removal applications and the extra horsepower handles any implement with the exception of the reciprocating spader (which requires a stronger PTO mounting). Overall, the most versatile tractors we offer. (Transmission compares directly to Grillo model G107d, but BCS 800 series has larger HP engine choices.) - BCS 750
|
BCS Model 750 walk-behind tractor (Shown with reciprocating spader implement)
This tractor uses the same transmission housing and internal gearing as the BCS 740 or 853, but differs in the following ways: 1. PTO coupling flange is CAST IRON (rather than aluminum), and has an integrated quick-coupling system that is specific to this tractor model. This heavier PTO mount allows connecting to high-weight / high-vibration tools such as the reciprocating spader or 33” tiller implement. (The BCS 33” tiller implement INCLUDES a quick-coupling component to couple with this tractor; this implement coupling must be purchased separately for ALL OTHER implements.) 2. Larger standard wheels with final-drive reduction units on sides of transmission to reduce ground speeds specifically for the aforementioned two implements, and helpful in general for soil-working tools. 3. Cast iron front weights mounted directly behind the engine to offset the weight of the very heavy soil-working implements this thing can operate (weights need to be removed to run most other implements). This tractor also features the new BCS Hydraulic clutch. This is basically a revamped model of the BCS 948, and is an improvement in every sense except the fact the 750 does NOT have a “transport” gear, so it is not recommended for transport trailers. (The model number of this unit follows the European model number sequence, rather than the “Americanized” BCS model sequence which has existed in North America since 1995, which is why it seems a bit out of order) Closest comparable Grillo model is G131, but Grillo G131 has heavier transmission.

- BCS 620
|
BCS Model 620 walk-behind tractor (shown with power sweeper implement)
This is the only tractor BCS imports to North America that is front-PTO only: handle bars do not rotate to rear –PTO mode, so it will not accept any tillage implements. Great for applications where only front-PTO implements are desired, such as mowers, snowblower, power sweeper, chipper/shredder, etc. (Transmission / implement compatibility compares directly to Grillo model GF4)

- Grillo
- Company History
 |
F ounded by the Pinza family in 1953 (and actually originally branded "Pinza") the Grillo company started building walk-behind tillage equipment in 1953, and was one of the first companies to offer interchangable implements on a walking tractor in Italy (original machines accepted a plow, tiller, sprayer and trailer). "Grillo" means "Cricket" in Italian (hence the "bug" in the Grillo logo), and asked why he chose that name for his company, Old Mr. Pinza said: "For an insect, they do not harm the garden, and they make a pleasant sound." Grillo walk-behind tractors have been one of BCS’s main competitors for decades, and actually the two companies collaborated from the 1960’s up through the early 1980’s, initially helping each other develop new implements and eventually even selling some of each other’s tractors (the old BCS models 705 and 755 were Grillo-manufactured and the old Grillo 7M had a BCS 725 transmission). BCS's original machines were walk-behind sickle bar mowers ONLY and it wasn't until BCS and Grillo started working together in the late 1960's that BCS started to offer tillers (Grillo's design) and Grillo to offer sickle bars (BCS's design). Today, the areas of expertise are still apparent: Grillo has the edge on a better tiller implement, and BCS makes a nicer sickle (cutter) bar mower implement. Grillo’s current model selection offers a good complement to the BCS line we have carried for years, and several implements are even interchangeable between Grillo and BCS using an inexpensive adapter. Grillo’s manufacturing plant is located in Cesena, in Northeastern Italy, and is still run by the Pinza Family. Grillo tractors will essentially accept the same selection of implement types as our BCS tractors. The advantages Grillo tractors offer: excellent quality at extremely competitive pricing; more user-service-friendly design for folks who want to maintain their own machine. Disadvantages are: Not a widely-established dealer service network in the U.S.A. (yet... we're working on it!) and since Grillo is newer to the U.S. market, the equipment is not as "Americanized" as the BCS equipment, (i.e. multilingual owners manuals, etc). For the peace of mind of our customers, we stock thousands of dollars worth of spare parts for the Grillo line, just like for everything else we offer.
CLICK HERE for a list of Grillo dealers in North America (and the West Indies). The list is arranged in alphabetical order by Country / State. If you have a Grillo dealer close to you, we encourage you to contact that dealer if you have interest in Grillo products. If you have no dealer near you, we are happy to ship Grillo products right to your door. (We [Earth Tools] are the North American distributor for Grillo walk-behind tractors, and all other dealers purchase from us. HOWEVER, we are NOT in the practice of “undercutting our dealers”, so, other than the small discount from Retail Price we offer [to help offset shipping costs], your cost on Grillo products will typically be the same whether you purchase from us or a local dealer.)

WARRANTY: Personal use: 5 years on internal transmission components (all components that run in the oil bath of the transmission: gears, shafts, bearings & seals) and 2 years on all other tractor components and Grillo branded implements; parts and labor. Total warranty (parts & labor) is one year when used for commercial, institutional or rental use. Engines are covered by the engine manufacturers warranty (Honda, Kohler/Lombardini, Briggs & Stratton or Yanmar); 2 years when used for personal use; 1 year for commercial or rental use.

Grillo Model G85 walk-behind tractor (shown with 22” tiller implement)
Our best selling non-differential tractor. This model is well suited for home gardening, stationary (pressure washer, chipper/shredder, log splitter) applications, some snow removal and transport tasks, but only limited mowing applications due to slow overall ground speed. Transmission compares directly to BCS models 718/722.

- Grillo G85D
|
Grillo Model G85D walk-behind tractor (shown with 10hp Kohler / Yamaha engine and 28” lawn mower implement)
Our lowest cost tractor with differential axle for ease of maneuvering. Excellent for medium-sized soilworking applications; also great for stationary applications (wood splitter, chipper/shredder, etc.) and some front PTO applications that do not require a high ground speed (snowblower, flail mower, etc.) but not recommended for large mowing applications due to limited ground speed. Comparable to the BCS model 732 but with slightly smaller size engine choices.

- Grillo G131
 |
Grillo Model G131 walk-behind tractor (shown with diesel engine & 32” tiller implement).
Our largest and heaviest duty tractor, specifically designed for heavy duty use or demanding soil-working implements. The spring-shock mounted handlebars and robust transmission design make this our best tractor to run the reciprocating spader implement. Limited speeds for mowing and when converting tractor to front-PTO mode, gearshift levers must be changed. (Closest comparable BCS model is 750, but 750 has lighter transmission) Has Synchronized PTO unit available to operate driven-wheel trailer, which turns this machine into a 4-wheel drive “truck” with a dump bed, capable of hauling 2000 pounds.
